To start, we put a stake in the ground and tied a rope around it. Using spray paint, we marked out a circle with a diameter of 16 feet and a three-foot inner circle. This step helps you visualize the size and layout of the fire pit area.
Clearing the area
After marking the area, we cleared the grass on top of it. However, we didn’t begin digging right away. Take your time to ensure everything is properly set before moving on to the next step.
Materials needed
Before diving into the construction process, make sure you have all the necessary materials. In our case, we found about 50 feet of retaining wall bricks on Facebook Marketplace. We also used landscape fabric, gravel, and other supplies. Make a list of materials based on your specific design and gather everything before proceeding.
Phase 2: Building the Fire Pit
Installing the retaining wall bricks
Once the area is cleared, it’s time to install the retaining wall bricks around the perimeter. Place landscape fabric underneath the bricks to prevent weed growth and secure them together using peel adhesive. This step provides the structure and boundaries for your fire pit area.
Adding landscape fabric
After securing the retaining wall bricks, apply landscape fabric to the ground. However, avoid placing it in the middle where the fire bowl will be placed. This allows for proper ventilation and prevents damage to the fabric.
Preparing the fire bowl area
With the retaining wall and landscape fabric in place, you can now prepare the fire bowl area. This involves cleaning the bricks and ensuring they are ready to withstand the heat and flames. Power washing the bricks is an effective way to clean them up and make them look new again.

Cleaning the bricks is essential to maintain their appearance and ensure the longevity of your fire pit. Utilize a power washer or other cleaning methods to remove dirt and debris. This step will give your fire pit a fresh and inviting look.
Phase 3: Building the Swing Structure
Digging the post holes
Now it’s time to move on to constructing the swing structure. Start by digging post holes in the ground. We used two 6×6 posts and dug them approximately four feet deep. Remember to leave enough space between the posts, around 10 feet, for optimal swing placement.
Setting the posts in concrete
For stability and durability, set the posts in concrete. We used around 14 bags of concrete for this step. Follow the instructions on the concrete bags and ensure the posts are securely set in place.
Constructing the beams and blocks
To create a sturdy support system for the swings, construct beams using two 2x8x12 boards. Fasten them together using deck screws. Additionally, reinforce the swing area with two 6×6 blocks to provide extra stability.
Installing the swings
Once the structure is assembled, it’s time to install the swings. Use the longest eye bolts you can find to hang the swings securely from the beams. This step completes the swing structure of the project.
Phase 4: Finishing Touches
Adding corner bracing for stability
For additional stability, use another 6×6 post to add corner bracing to the swing structure. This will ensure that it remains sturdy and safe for use.
Installing the pergola top
To provide shade and a decorative element, install a pergola top. Cut 2×4 boards into approximately 16-inch lengths and screw them in place, spacing them about a foot apart. This step adds a charming touch to your outdoor space.
Completing the landscaping
